Robber romance: life outside the law and restrictive rules; complete freedom, limited only by one’s own code of honor; wealth unburdened by extortionate levies, and endless fun. All this is complete nonsense, existing only on the pages of novels and in the tales of cunning recruiters who lure those who are hopelessly desperate or full of naive illusions into their criminal networks. Where there is no law, there reigns only cruel lawlessness, giving the freedom to kill on the orders of chieftains or to be killed by their will. The switch from legal patrons to ruthless oppressors is akin to a sentencing from which one is unlikely to escape. The only chance is to bite the bullet and survive, relying on the mercy of fate and luck. And then, perhaps, a piece of the much-desired pie will gleam. However, even having tasted its sweetness, it is not always possible to overcome the bitterness of so many disappointments. And sometimes those who manage to survive and achieve something, want to quit their dirty trade no less than those who have only just savored all of its ‘charm’.
