The question is: what is this annoying feature that sometimes makes my creatures do whatever they like in battle and how can i get rid of it?

It's waywardness. You must've taken a restoration drink from tavern.
It'll go away on it's own in a while (you can see the duration on your character profile page). |
Yes, that's it. I hadn't noticed (i don't drink a lot).

Do not drink the free tavern drink for the 17th birthday to restore health. Each drink gives a 10% chance of your units doing their own will (it's called waywardness there).
This can also happen if you join certain pvp battles and you do nothing else but wait or defend. |
