I was never able to understand it :(
Can someone explain in easy language what is it?
And its benefits and even how to create it :) |
Changes your IP, that's all I know.
In some university dorms (Or whatever the name is), they block access yo specific games n websites, so you use a VPN to avoid the barrier. |

I don't imagine this to be a problem in Europe tbh, never had to use a VPN whilst at uni and went on many things :P |
Well, to be honest, last couple of months I have been forced to use vpn to play this game, because with my connection game is lagging too much. It coudl be maybe problem with DNS of my internet provider or whatever... So I use one free VPN service and game is not lagging anymore. |

It is in my country. Not really in my uni, but my friend had to use it |
VPN has some uses- mostly about private access and overcoming minor inconveniences.
1. Privacy - websites cannot track you/your address by ISP (unless you are being investigated for some crime :p)
2. Alternate gateway - you can bypass restrictions of certain kind - for example some content may be restricted to Russian audiences but you may access it from another country if you assign a Russian IP through your VPN. This doesnt always work especially if its something really serious.
It might seem really handy and it is definitely going to be advertised to be a worthy service but make no mistake, the IP addresses provided by VPN are special and these days more and more wesbites will detect a fake IP address and deny access. |
for chikish:
VPN stands for Virtual Private Network.
In simple terms:
Say you want to connect to a website say YouTube but it is blocked in your country. When you use a VPN, you connect to some other site and tell it to connect you to YouTube. The VPN website does that work for you and connects you to YouTube.
Why people use VPN?
There are several reasons but most prominent ones are:
1. Access to blocked websites.
2. Increasing privacy: When you connect to websites using VPN, your real IP address is not shown rather a different one is shown.
3. Releasing sensitive information: Most whistleblowers and spies use VPN services to publicize their findings and/or to communicate. Eg: Edward Snowden used some VPN service to share his documents with journalists at The Guardian.
So, mostly VPN is used to increase your privacy and anonymity over the internet.
Hope you understand now, I explained it to you in very simple terms :)
A little more information:
Nowadays, people mostly use TOR networks for anonymity. TOR and VPN are kind of similar in how they work but TOR provides you access to onion websites. These websites are not available on "common" browsers like Chrome, Firefox, Safari, IE etc.

A basic analogy I thought of:
Suppose you're a wanted criminal and the police are looking for you everywhere. You're in hiding but you suddenly get a craving for pizza. You obviously cant go out so you ask a friend to go to a pizza shop and buy a pizza for you and in return you give him a dollar.
In this case, you're your computer, your friend is the VPN and pizza shop is the forbidden YouTube site :) |
@MarineBiologist
thx man i was always kinda wondering just knew it changed ip forbypass/privacy |
Will it make my connection faster just tell me this??
These explanations are so technical =_= |
VPN stands for Virtual Private Network.
Most common usage:
You get a token + password enabling You to log in from home (or any place) into Your companies network.
It provides You full access to companies network in a secure way (as You were sitting in the office connected to the LAN (Local Area Network)
Also VPN connection is used / provided for a partner company working as subordinate to Your company. i.e. a software developer company colleages gain "far" acces to companies network from their office to support activities - to see the same databases etc. |
It makes Your connection faster since:
You gain a dedicated connection (which cannot be used by other users) -> so even if 1000 public users use the same site, Your connection won't be slower
As it simulates a "virtual" machine within the network (You connect to) it will be obviously faster such us Your computer were connected via a cable to the network |
Imagine:
100 cars want to use the same gate, there is a huge traffic jam.
While Your car got a private tunnel (which can be used only by You) to the other side of the gate. |
