Pirate Hunt
It’s been a while since the Pirate fleet last stormed the prison fortress. Their deadly cannons, aided by the living as well as the undead, failed to break down the Imperial resistance. The island’s coastline has since been fortified a great deal, and pirates now resort themselves to pouncing on lone merchant ships and raiding small shore settlements.
This is why Tolgar was surprised that a dwarf guard had arrived to deliver an urgent report concerning pirates. Nonetheless, he bid the messenger enter his chambers.
A grey-haired dwarf stepped inside: beard down to the floor, in his right hand a war hammer, in his left a shield depicting a Griffin with his wings spread wide. Under Tolgar’s baleful stare, the dwarf grew all fidgety; slowly he drew his shield behind his back and revealed a haggard-looking elderly sorcerer.
“Those bloody pirates have been avoiding direct conflict lately,” – the guard began. “But we figured out how to entrap them using our ships in pairs. Just today we seized a pirate barque with several captives in its hold… including this mage standing beside me.”
“When did pirates begin taking captives?” – Tolgar questioned the sorcerer.
“I know not, my lord,” – softly replied the old man. – “But I’ve been on several ships already and seen pirates trading captives like merchandise. Some they sell into slavery; others they bring to Captain Red Beard himself for interrogation. As for me, they used my magical powers to navigate in storms.”
“Whatever the pirates have in mind, we must strike first.” Tolgar’s motionless face appeared carved in stone, betraying none of the rage he felt upon hearing the sorcerer’s tale. “I will immediately discuss this news with Grammith!”
Valiant Lords and Ladies, Warlord Grammith declares the Pirate Hunt season open!
1. A personal ship is waiting for every player of CL 5+ in Harbor City.
2. The initial capacity of your ship is 50%, which indicates how much of your army you can bring into battle and how much damage your character’s spell inflict.
3. Combat is staged in a new format featuring two player-controlled ships against one Pirate ship.
4. You are promoted in rank for winning battles, and demoted for losing.
5. In every battle, you earn silver depending on the outcome and on your rank.
6. Imperial workshops accept silver as payment for adding cannons to your ships or increasing your ship’s capacity, allowing it to hold more of your army and to increase your character’s spell damage.
7. The higher your rank, the stronger your pirate opponent.
8. Cannon parameters depend on your CL and can be upgraded.
9. To prevent pirates from capturing any valuable elements, modifications have NO effect in these battles, though you may equip any artifacts you like.
10. You are given up to 12 pirate hunt attempts per day. Any unused attempts carry over to the next day.
11. The Pirate Hunt will last 7 days, through July 22nd. Two additional days will be available, through July 24th, to use up any remaining attempts.
12. In each victory over a Pirate you may win a creature armament.
13. Seeing how many pirates have taken to slave-trading, you may encounter cages aboard their ships, which can be destroyed with spells or in melee. When you destroy a cage, the captives are freed and join your army. One of the creature stacks freed this way may be taken with you in a subsequent fight.
14. You may also spend silver to purchase brand new weaponry called Net Cannon. Net Cannon can shoot nets at enemy targets to immobilize them for two standard turns.
15. The Empire will generously reward Lords and Ladies who gather the most silver during the Pirate Hunt.
May you be victorious! | [awards announcement]
Awards for Pirate Hunters
Empire’s most courageous heroes really took the fight to the pirates, readily risking their lives to rescue captives. The very best hunters seemed to become one with the sea: they anticipated oncoming storms, negotiated craggy rocks and pounced on the pirate fleet like frenzied beasts, sinking one ship after another. Sailors dubbed these daredevils Leviathans – Masters of the Seas.
Morning sneaked up on Harbour City, dispelling the midnight haze with a light breeze, and the rising sun flooded the coastline with crimson light. On the wharf two figures looked at flotsam and jetsam washing ashore here and there. One was the dwarf leader Tolgar, and the other At’Araxia. The Dark Elf did not dare board any ships, opting to spectate from the shore.
“I’ve heard pirates had launched many attacks on your fortress. Now the Empire strikes back,” – she said, casting a fleeting glance at Tolgar.
“The seadogs were up to something, my lady. Had we not foiled their plans, sooner or later we would be paying a much higher price for subduing them,” – replied the dwarf, taking in the view of his Amazonian interlocutrix. He respected her mental strength and fighting spirit, but did not know her well enough for a true heart-to-heart.
“I’ll have to take your word for it. After living underground for so long, we’ve forgotten what it’s like to go on the offensive,” – commented At’Araxia after a brief silence. She pointed toward the East: “What lies there, beyond the island?”
“Lands I once considered my home,” – the dwarf responded curtly, a shadow overcoming his face. “But you and I had better get going, lest we miss the awards ceremony. They say Tamer Dark Elves acquitted themselves well in this hunt.”
Lords and Ladies, the pirate fleet has been pulverised and remnants of their ships now line the sea bottom! The Empire is grateful to all those who rose to the rallying call and contributed to this fine victory. The trophies taken from the see robbers are now being split among all heroes who have collected upwards of 250 silver.
All those who have notched at least one victory are invited to claim their rewards in gold, based on their number of victories and Combat Level. Go directly to the Pirate Hunt page to claim your bounty.
The best 10 clans have also been generously rewarded with gold from the Imperial treasury.
The top 102 Lords and Ladies and top 50 clans have left their indelible marks in the history of the Empire:

:) | By the way, here is the interview translation with the top-1 pair.
Interviewer: Hi, let's start with the introduction. What are your names what are you doing in real life?
Verbotten: Yaroslav, 4th-year student. I've been playing HWM for 6 years.
Alcon: Alexandr, 7 years in the game.
Interviewer: First, congratulations. Is it your first big success or have you had noticeable winnings before?
Verb: Initially, this char was designed for PvP battles. A year ago I won an MT at 15 lvl, however, this is my first big win at the non-PvP event. Usually, I don't have time to complete it but this time everything was good.
Alcon: Yes.
Interviewer: How did you manage studies/work with the event?
Verb: I just completed my exams and summer internship before the event started. The only thing is that I had to reschedule my additional courses to meet mate's time to play together.
Alkon: that was hard. 12 battles per day are too much.
Interviewer: Did MT affect your participation in the event?
Verb: No, I didn't have time and I am not ready for 16 lvl yet.
Alkon: No.
Interviewer: What thoughts did you have when reading about the new format of the event (2vs1, unlimited arts, enhancements do not work)?
Verb: I was thinking of buying missing Temporal-set arts. Thanks to Krouchavel (id 1811789) who sold me cheaper than the market. He is a former clanmate.
Alkon: it was interesting to test new format.
Interviewer: How and when you decided to play together?
Verb: We have been playing together for many years, immediately.
Alkon: after the announcement.
Interviewer: What were your plans before the start? When did you realize you can get top-1? Who helped you and gave you some advice? How much did it cost?
Verb: Honestly, we were thinking to play well but not top. Initially, our plan was HL + Demon. However, after the first loss against a wizard, Alkon switched to DD. I did not think about expenses and I reckon I spent the least than top-100. I've used Temporal set for myself and rent Inquisitor set to Alkon. As I had more time, I was organizing the entire sets for every battle. Alkon also used sniper bow, dungeon ring, rangers pendant, and task axe. Overall, it was about 170k of expenses.
Alkon: When we got general-admiral, we understood we could get top-1. I was worrying about the expenses but then I got used to it and by the end of the event I am in a small profit. No one, except Verb, helped us.
Interviewer: Why did you decide to spend so much money not knowing what was going to happen and what rewards could be for the event? How much money did you get in the end? What do think about new pirate boots and pirate set as a whole?
Verb: We took the risk as the event required more than shop arts. I was hoping to get a dagger in the left hand. As for money, we got miserable 47k. It would be better if the final gold reward were based on total silver you earned but not total wins. Wins on different levels are not the same. As for the pirate set, it is unique and I collect it myself. It is perfect for my favorite HK.
Alkon: Yes, we got about 47k of gold. Boots look nice, even though there are a lot of them today in the market, and the set is going to be a cheating one.
Interviewer: Did you have your own strategy and did you follow it?
Verb: Yes.
Alkon: Yes.
Interviewer: Now let’s talk about your builds and skills. The next 4 four pairs and pure attackers. Your builds, on the other hand, are supports. Was it your own decision and did come up with this builds?
Verb: Yes, we have a lot of experience from the previous events and the last event showed that this build works fine.
Alkon: Yes, I had to adjust RD to DD because of the tough wizards. But in general, everything was planned in advance. | Interviewer: Were you afraid if someone overrun you in the last day of the event copying your build? Did you receive any PM asking to share battles?
Verb: Yes, a little bit. We knew we were definitely in the top. We got “Leviathan” for the first time before we were not in the top for a short time and that moment encouraged us to do more. When we got “Leviathan” for the second time already being at the top, we received a lot of PM asking to show the battles. We even had to change our alts to classic ones when we were offline to hide our tactic.
Alkon: Yes, we received a lot of spam.
Interviewer: Can you share you your best battles against each type of pirate?

Interviewer: How and when did you know about the possibility of moving cannons around the field with a Teleport spell, Archdevils’ abilities, and arts that increase troops’ speed?
Verb: From the previous events. I used it under full buff. Admins might fix this feature next time.
Alkon: From the previous events.
Interviewer: Let’s talk about your arts. Why did chose Temporal set for Holy Knight and Inquisitor set + Rangers pendant for DD?
Verb: Temporal set is essential, as I had to overrun bukinirs on an ini scale to shoot first. Here are some common questions I received during the event and my answers:
1) Q: Why Inquisitor set is so important for DD? Is HK mass rapid really not enough for a battle?
A: Yes, because I had to choose advanced sorcery to teleport Alkon’s cannons closer to mine. In addition, DD has an infinite mana. Comments are not required what it means if you are casting mass holy/darkness magic.
2) Q: Can you explain why DD has an unlimited mana? As far as I know DD can eat only its own troops.
A: Yes, but there are creatures with a lot of HP. In the provided battle – treefolk = full mana.
3) Q: What is the average battle time, 40-50 min?
A: every battle is different.
Alkon (about the sets): these sets were planned in advance.
Interviewer: One of the new features of this event is to free captured troops. In your opinion, what are the most valuable creatures? Is it worth it to spend your turn to release them?
Verb: Yes. We free every single troop. Sometimes it allowed us to block opponent’s shooters without sacrifice of our own troops. I reckon the most cheating creature is raiding harpies. In general, a unit with high speed and ini is useful.
Alkon: harpies are cheating ones. Two battles were won only because of them. Slow units with low ini are useless. Sorcerers sometimes were also useful.
Interviewer: How did use it? Did you keep it until next time?
Verb: I have used all units available.
Harpies: http://www.heroeswm.ru/war.php?lt=-1&warid=785973302&show_for_all=4f13da73b5
Tigers: http://www.heroeswm.ru/war.php?lt=-1&warid=785797029&show_for_all=c80705dc92
Alkon: Usually they distracted me, so I haven’t used them a lot.
Interviewer: There was an idea to sell the extra unit in the market. What do you think?
Verb: Troops are designed to use in the battle. They are not for sale.
Alkon: I guess that it is a nice idea.
Interviewer: Only two of you have got the highest rank. What were your thoughts about getting a higher rank (if available)?
Verb: As I mentioned before, we got “Leviathan” before we were in top-100. When we try to reach next lvl, AI acted rather strange as “admin” controlled it artificially. I think the next rank does not exist.
Alkon: we were worried more about not losing the current rank than achieving the next one. However, when we had 3 wins in a row, we exp | Interviewer: Only two of you have got the highest rank.
However, when we had 3 wins in a row, we expected to get a new one. Usually, it appeared after 3 consecutive wins.
Interviewer: Many players complain that the system that ranks players and gives silver is not clear. Some players suspected that you have to lose on purpose at the right moment. How do you think?
Verb: We got more silver as we won tougher high-level battles. Every 3-4 consecutive wins give you the next rank. 2-3 defeats and you lose a current rank. We did not lose any battle on purpose. Our goal was to win every battle. We had exact the opposite strategy: if we knew we had a chance of getting a new rank, we would use some featured units that we saved in the previous battles.
Alkon: we always played for a win. I think the system is that the more opponent troops you killed in a lost battle, the easier next battle will be.
Interviewer: Players have also complained about numerous bugs and errors. What did you face any unfortunate events?
Verb: there were a couple of strange things. First, when you buff a unit in the cage before you destroyed cage, after the release, all buffs become invisible and you have to memorize what you used. Another “feature” was when the opponent wanted to attack DD’s cannons but you teleport them on your side, troops did not know what to do for a while.
Alkon: Nothing serious.
Interviewer: What do you like most/least in the new event? What suggestions can you give to improve it?
Verb: new tactics. However, there too many battles and they are quite long. AI has been changing during the event – that’s not right. Pirate-wizard is out of balance. Something has to be done with it. Bugs that were found by other players have to be fixed.
Alkon: Imbalanced wizard. There are too many battles. 7-8 would be optimal.
Interviewer: What are your plans in HWM now, after the event? What are you going to do with your reward art?
Verb: I will continue to progress. I keep the boots as I want to collect the Pirate set. However, there is no difference in durability between top-1 and top-102. That’s not fair. The event is super. Good luck everyone.
Alkon: I already sold my boots. The plan is to improve Smith’s Guild up to max.
