| Melee damage is simply damage that is not done by shooters (at range) and spells, such as druids using lightning. |
If one of your troops deals damage in close combat it will be melee damage.
If one of your shooting creatures shoots, it will be ranged damage.
I don't really know what to explain there more. |

"melee damage", "close combat" : means your stack is standing next to the enemy stack (on an adjacent tile, diagonal included)
"ranged damage" : there is at least 1 tile of distance between the enemy stack and yours
Exception : some *abilities* can extend the range of the melee attack (Dragonbreath, Slam). But the attack/effect classifies as *ability*. |
