Basic character inventory is 30 items. As far as I know the maximum *permanent* character inventory space is 55 items after purchasing the Warehouse (+5 items), Underground Depot (+10 items) and Cache (+10 items).
You'd probably find that you haven't purchased one or other of the constructions in the Faction that you changed to or from recently in conjunction with misremembering the maximum inventory space.
Either that or perhaps you bought Abu-Bakir's Charm and didn't notice that it ran out?
