Authorlarge creature spot
for things like chain lightning, which spot from a large creature is taken to calculate the distance?
was it the bottom left or the top left square?
It's the top left square
You mean to calculate distance from large creature to next target, right ? It should be the center, is it not ?
top left?
so is a diagonal square the same distance as a creature on one of the four main sides?

this means it is random in which direction things like chain lightning goes?
The tile distance count is 1 for the horizontal/vertical tiles and tile distance count for diagonal tiles is 1.5.
This is the reason the troops move more steps in horizontal/vertical then in diagonal.

The chain lightning goes to the next nearest target depending on the tile distance and if 2 or more creatures have the same tile distance then it is random to fall on either of the target.
so:

- A
- B
C C
C C

i put chain lightning on B, it would always go to A next?
since A is 1 square away and C 1.5 aquares?

No, they are both the same distance away.

Yes ,
here is an example,

'Dirty Harry' first chain light on Archliches ,the next target was Patriarchs and not lava dragons because pats are '2' tiles away from liches where as dragon's top left tile is '2.5' tiles away from liches top left tile.

i hit lower succubi stack, but always goes only to the cave demons and not to upper succubi stack and upper cave demons ?
Retribution strike:
Upon successful attack, if there is an enemy creature "adjacent to the target", retribution strike jumps to it dealing normal physical damage, and so on, until the chain is broken. This chain can affect up to 4 creatures.

Chain lightning
Deals damage to a total of four stacks, jumping from the target to the "closest stack", be allied or hostile. Each new target takes half as much damage as the previous one.

Maybe there both work differently ,I'm not sure of it.
i thought it was just due to translation from russian, but both were closest.
