Yes they can trace people's IP.
It's not unsafe since only admins can do it. Noone else, as long as they don't get hacked (pretty hard, so don't worry).

They keep track of 32 million battle logs (32 million combat links which are not that simple to be loaded at all), why would a max-15-digits-length sequence of characters be a problem ? |

On this website, besides admins, no one else can. You shouldn't have to worry.

The same way they keep track of thousands of combats and transfers for each player, they can also keep track of IP addresses you and everyone else has logged in from. If they believe it would be too much, they could only keep the last 1000 IP's for each player or something similar. Through simple checking algorithms, they can see possible suspects for multi-characters. |
Almost every website you ever visit can see your IP address and most your have to register with store it somewhere.
This is just one of the many ways admins can see if people are abusing the rules and not the only one they depend upon to decide if someone is cheating.
There is no interest to them to use for anything else so as long as you dont cheat you really have nothing to worry about. |
