Tournaments, Group Battles, events (though seldom), yes:
this game is better than HoMM
Not to mention, HOMM6 looks almost the same as HOMM5v3.1, just one new army.
Should have been called HOMM5v4.0
I played the HOMMVI beta and actually I wish it were HOMM5v4.0...HOMMVI barely resembles a traditional HOMM game in my opinion. They modified many of the things for me I enjoy from the series...I was excited about VI when it was announced...but was very disappointed with the playing experience as a whole (from the new hero development system to castle building/upgrading to resource management; excluding expected balancing issues and bugs from a beta release).

Contrary to the opinion of many hardcore HOMM fans, I actually think V brought many innovative new ideas to the series from III (IV was sort of rubbish) that worked very well to enhance the game and not destroy it given it was another new development team...problem was that the game itself was very buggy, slow, and the adventure AI was lousy for single playing mode (there is a new awesome AI mod developed by Qauntomas, which makes the AI intelligent and challenging)...

I will still probably give VI a chance once the retail version comes out, but just not impressed from what I have seen thus far...will try to hopefully be more open-minded about it though...
i forgot to tell u my opinion
what i dont like is
-------
1- towns themes not full screen
2- camera is not good some how
3- even the x button is too small
4- i didn't enjoy the battles like HOMM V or HOMM III i don't know why
---------------
need a lot of works
its ok with me if the delay the game
IV was sort of rubbish

I liked HoMM IV, because I could fight with Hero. One of the strategies there was to upgrade several heroes and you could fight with just heroes.
Actually I was disappointed when that feature was removed in HoMM V.

The only thing that I didn't like in all HoMM series: there was very little challenge. I'm not talking about some created maps where you die in the first weak or so, I'm talking about 99% maps where you evolve and have taken 50% towns and then the game becomes too boring to finish that map (the last battle should be the hardest, not the easiest).

I've always played on impossible difficulty (such name is in HoMM 3) and it was too easy.
One of the best addons to HoMM series is WoG (for HoMM 3), where:
- your troops get experience too!
- moreover, you could modify the rules to make game much more challenging
- you could get all secondary skills
- you could have henchmen (your selected creature, which later gets a lot of health)
- and you get a hero, who can fight in battle (you can upgrade him too)!

But even in WoG it was too easy to play (I mean the end of the game always too easy and too boring to finish - I have finished only 40% maps).
