i thought that the max exp in ambushes was 2000 x combat level = 26000 exp

Yes, at level 13, I remember that number pop up pretty frequently.
Different levels will have different max numbers. That 26000 goes for fights against neutrals I think. Caravans are not neutrals. They are sort of special. |
