Four things:
1) Wizards have a special ability to deal more damage to neutral creatures, and that damage increases with every faction level.
2) There was once a time when losing a battle gave you 0 xp and some fsp. This enabled players to lose intentionally to gain faction levels without advancing in combat level. This bug has since been fixed, and it is no longer possible.
3) The player in that combat utilized the bug before it was removed, to the extreme point that he gained 5-6 level on EVERY FACTION at level 2. I was surprised too when I ran across his profile, but Etheriality is pretty famous around here. Check the combat log:
Combats fought: 3934
Victories: 217
Defeats: 3717
Count 0.5 fsp for each and every one of those fights, and voila, you have your answer.
