You can see from _ALEX 's combat log, that they often fight in everyone for oneself battles together, and that often one of them wins:

To show that it is not just a coincidence take a look at these two battles (one includes myself as a loser), especially look at the way they setup and use their units (the magis):

other combats where they fight together also show that they rarely attack each other unless they have to.
