valdemar is good, but how about the sword of truth set by goodkin and the wheel of time by jordan.
Tolkien sucks really bad

Said the grandmaster of the golden bookshelf, owner of the "thousand books read" trophy..
i own tons of books my dad want me 2 get rid of them but not going 2 happen
The point was that the elves, goblins, orcs, ents and dragons as we know them in this game come from tolkien`s work. Of course it was part of Norse/English mythology but he gave them the final shape.

Get rid of the books? Just dont burn them..
read the hobbit it was horrible
i have it wasnt that bad...

not even close!!
LOTR hands down
d&d made modern day elves dragons etc. lol
George R.R. Martin: A Song of Ice and Fire series.
Percy Jackson Series is pretty good :)
Brandon Sanderson: The Mistborn Trilogy.
Not a better read out there to date!

R.A.Salvatore: His early works on Drizzt 'Legacy of the Drow' and some later ones such as 'The Thousand Orcs' trilogy

Richard A. Knaak: (Duology) (All his other works besides these 2 are garbage)
The Legend of Huma
Kaz the Minotaur

Some othe great authors:
Dennis L. Mckiernan, Harry Harrison (Cross and the Hammer), David Gemmell (Legend), Raymond E. Feist, Margaret Weiss and Tracy Hickman (together, and never separate!), etc etc etc

Tolkien set the way of fantasy, without him the genre would not be here, or not what it is today at least. He is afterall the Father of Fantasy. However he comes from a time of a far different writing, he himself called himself a historian and not a storyteller. His writing proves this - long winded and very descriptive. LOTR begs the question, "Why didnt those eagles just fly there and drop the ring in in the first place?"
Belgarion and Mandalorian series.

agreed: and also about the historian bit, the History of Middle Earth makes a good read once you muster enough patience to sit through it.

What you must realise about Tolkien is how complete Middle Earth is. The appendices of the LOTR series reveals in details the lineage of human, elves and dwarves... the various scripts, maps and timelines. And how each of his books are interwined with each other (i'm talking beyond the trilogy ofcourse).

Also remember that Tolkien converted elves into tall graceful creatures of the mysterious forests.

Terry Pratchet's Gameworld series and Jonathan Stroud's Bartemeas Trilogy are also good reads.
