For me Knights at level 5 - up .. THey are balanced in attack and Def .. ^^
For level 1 - 4 : Wizards and Elves .. ^^ |

my opinion:
1-2: i reached level3 too fast, can't say wich is better at low levels
3-4: DE (unkillable minos)
5-7: knights (too many griffins and swords)
8+: DE (shrews) |
