AuthorMercenary Quests - are they insane?
I just tried 2 mercenary 'quests' - seeing that I received NO information about the numbers of creatures I would be facing, but the read-me says L5 should be doable I expected a tough fight:

The first battle several groups of 4 minos turned up after I had placed my troops - well I killed them all - Hooray!!! - I won!!!! - But wait, what's this? Several more groups, this time of 13 minos each appeared - and fo rall i knew there were more waiting ... I have no idea because I ki lled all but 1 and that last one beat me.

I had to log off then so I was wondering if I could have returned and fought the rest once I had replenished my resources?

The next day I saw that quest was over. So I returned to the Mercs Guild looking for another Quest. This time I was facing wizards? Fair enough. But no more info except the destination. Well I initiated the battle with all my forces and items on this time an ddiscovered I was facing units I had never even heard of in addition to a multiple of the same units that I have ... and basically they smashe dmy small army to peieces.

Well, what next? Maybe I could finish these invaders off by waiting for my army to be replenished? Nope - that's it. Is this totally off the scale or what?
it is difficult to beat a lot of the merc quests at level 5. At best I have a 30-40% success rate. Some of them are doable at level 5, but a lot are just too difficult. Once you hit level 6 however, it becomes a lot easier. (By the way, the monster quests are extremely difficult at level 5)
how do you do that mercenary things i can't and i'm level 5 and level 3 do them
Some of these quest are realy tough others are just tough. Some are realy easy and some I would not accept in lvl 8.

Generally speaking most defend our troop quest (Vanguard of XYZ)are easy except the vanguard of necros (on the other hand u are a wizard, so maybe u can beat those apparations).

I found the deliver package quest realy tough, but there is a chance supposedly, that u wont face anyone and can complete the quest for free.

Most monster quests are insane, but maybe you are able to kill some of those 1st tier monsters especially the gremlins.

Most army quest are not so tough, cause you will have multiple tries and each troop killed before stays dead.

The invader quest vary in thoughness.


In general the quest become harder the more often you do the same quest again. And if you want to know what you should expect i recommend to look up the combat locks of some other players who already have done a lot of these quests before.
to do mercenary quests you must go to the mercenary guild in yellow lake. (it's under public services).

Also in answer to raggidman, some quests allow 3 tries to defeat the enemy army, but some only allow one. It will tell you if more are allowed in the description of the quest once you accept it.
Ah by the way never forget, that to accomplish a quest you not onyl have to beat these troops, but you must also return to the merc-guild in the preset timeframe.
ragidman you shouldn't be complaining. you wizards are the best at mercenary quests because of your double damge against neutral creatures with magic stay back and use magic. keep running.
I shouldn't be complaining XxfaithxX? rofl - 'pologies I did not know that getting smashed to bits was what is supposed to happen! And did you never realise that the stronger elements in the wiz armies at L5 are those that are the slowest?

I tried a third - escort carqavan - met 5 cavalry, several monks 2 lots of X-bowmen and several armies of pezzies of different sizes ...

Found myself setting up in the middle of the field and although I might have done better I was again totally overwhelmed.

I saw spartan500's clips of defeating Necro Advance - amazing! maybe there will be Merc Quests that I can complete.

What I find most frustrating is that as often as not my wonderful wizards usually get picked off before they can deliver damage. Against an equal enemy that buys me time to use other means - against higher level armies that is not enough ...

Escort and Invaders usually comes with different troops, 2 cavaliers can be replaced with 5 griffins, 9 crossbowmen with 15 bowmen and so on.

Wizards does have a big advantage in those missions, magic arrow does big damage ignores the 20-30 defense of the Cavaliers, Treefolks, and Giants. You might consider reset erudition and use the point for higher spell power. Also use full gargoyles to survive longer. in quests your spells are the major damage source, not golems or magi.

As lv 5 Wizard it should be possible to complete most escort, vanguards and army quests up to {2}-{3}, see other wizards' older lvl 5 battle logs to get some ideas.
just won 1 mercenary quest so far...... so tough man....
ICutMySelfXP - maybe at higher levels the balance changes and I am sure kusika is a fine and skillful player also.

I just won a merc quest against goblins - my feeling about many of these remains ... they are impossible. So maybe I should start to enjoy losing?

I like a challenge - but I like a doable challenge. I feel for other 'races' if their armies have a tougher time - that does not mean that I think this is set up the best way because I get one advantage. I want to see it set up so that others get advantages in these 1 player quests too.

There are downsides to everything, I know.

MiyabiDoll - As far as I know Magic Arrow is an air elemental spell - I did not find the bit about it avoiding resistances. The spell the magi have is punch and that is a physical spell that avoids magic defense.

:D - I have erudition ty - guess that is worth it - though another option is a 10% recovery speed increase for the hero after casting personal spells ... I guess there are other factors too

Army quests at {0} look simply impossible at the moment. Vanguard may be a better challenge, the escort quest simply left me with too many attackers to face at once and inadequate defence - bu tI have an idea to deal with future cavalry that I will try out.

I have full gargoyles ty - thing is that it is necessary to hold off the cavalry from every direction until you get to the edge of the map - and Cav have higher initiative. Also I have to split the gargs = not so useful ... but ty again for the ideas. What I am thinking is to leave a space between defending units and just accept the pezzie/recruit damage.

Geblehan and XxFaithxX - if you don't agree with what I have said about how crazy many of these quests are then please say so - that is what this thread invited you to do and it's cool - but don't rubbish me personally like that - you haven't earned the right nor have you been invited to step over that line.

he wasn't refering to resistance but to defense as in the primary skills attack and defense, which is not taken into consideration for magical damage

I find army quests easier (atleast as DE, though not all and probably only {0} ones) cause you get 3 tries, of course all 3 tries must be within the 180 min time limit. Just concentrate and eliminate the most dangerous elements using spells and you should be able to do a few of these.


But I think the quests are not too hard. The way it is set up LVL 5, only can do a very few quests succesfully, lvl 6 can do more and so on. Which means that only the best players can do the quests at lvl 5. Others have to wait a little longer.
some wizards got to lv 2 Mq level at lv 5.. so i consider that good. i didn't do mq at lv 5 al li did was hunts and group battles.

& you all don't think that's Raggidman's point? The quest should be more accessible. The description says that you shouldn't try these quests until you reach level 5, but you are all saying that most people are not going to stand a chance of beating them till they are probably Level 7 or higher seems a little stupid to me. Seems like this will just convince more of the casual players to just dump the game, since it will be another thing that they can't do.
Actually you can do a lot of these quests even without arts.

for example i solved the vanguard of wizards quest 9 times in lvl 5
or vanguard of dark elfes 4 times.

The army of knights is also pretty easy i did that 5 times.

And a whole bunch of low lvl creature raids can be defeated.

Just keep trying and decline the harder quests and you should do just fine.

You have the freedom to try without loss, since you won't loose any skeltons :-).
Mercenary Quests - are they insane?

Yes.

At level 5, most of them are out of reach. At level 6, it's tough.

Vanguard of XXX may be doable (don't even try vanguard of Necromancers though)
Army of XXX can be done because you have three attempts.
XXX-monster is awful, you have one giant creature with 1800+ HP doing 40-50 damage each turn. Never managed to do it yet.
Delivery mission is so hard it's laughable; yet interesting to discover how tier 7 creatures can crush you.
The "waves" of creatures is also doable, just remember there are two waves!

So in summary, do not hesitate to refuse a mission. You can also check battle log of top players, you'll certainly see mercenary missions they did.
delivery mission is easy sometimes, wizrd brigands are easy to beat if u kill they're magis first. also, necro army is toughest army mission, they raise skeletal archers, and have loads of troops
I just faced a delivery mission. its was kinda easy took out the calvery and i won and wizard in dilivery mission is kinda hard sometimes. their titans and all those guys with 1 kick can kill 3-4 minos and they are only a stack of 1..
raggidman, i wear combat staff, wizard hat, and cloak for most of the quest and i manage to reach merc guild lvl2 at combat lvl 5

maybe u need abit of equipments
