Change your talent setup and stats, high def and magic is wasted on an opponent who is primarily using magic to deal damage. I would go for full might.
Increase vermins if you can to drain mana faster, perhaps splittng them so you have a greater chance of a morale burst happening before he has been depleted, then make sure he never gets to do magic again when he uses mana recovery.
don;t worry s much about splitting your troops, removing his magic forces him to come to you ,in which case you want to control that exchange through weight of numbers.

isolate golems as they are slow, save them for last enabling fiends and thers to gang up on gargoyles

This is what I tried to do. But Wiz hero targets horses first and quickly kills them. I get 2-3 turns with horses :/
Actually I tried 1 more battle with Mass Disrupt but no benefit(

Maybe reduce vermins for wolfhounds would be a better option.
Your vermins could have been nearer enemy in setup, so you could have an attack in the first turn.
You could have used disruption on gargs instead of hitting with hero.
Why did you run with vermins at the end?
Playing with fiends is playing with leap damage. Try to leap around. Sometimes it's good to leave enemy stacks alive just to jump it and have a good damage at next leaps. Just to think about.
But yeah, of course fsl is a matter too. |

You could switch this to either morale based ones to beath up on him faster - recruit could help with number of hp (and numbers of vermins)
Get a potion of oblivion from the shop (free) and switch around your basic parameters.
A useful trick is to save your own talent set up (Even if it is the same as one of the prearranged ones) as it also stores your basic parameter setup at the same time, therefore enabling you to switch talents and stats at teh same time without using potion of oblivion (other than the first time)

Also forgot to mention the defence magic talent with barrier to give 20% magic resitance if desired. |

It didn't work too. Infact I did poor than the battle I linked in 1st post, hence I didn't link it. :)

To save them, so they could siphon mana. Wiz had mana recovery :)

This is a strategy I didn't think about. Unfortunately the errand is gone and I can't put it to test now but Thank you anyway! :)
