so far i've only saw this with cursed witches and forest brethen.
for cursed witch the damage that should be displayed before attacking it, is only half of what it really does. this should only be like that before the first turn of the cursed witches.
And concerning the forest brethen, i think the defense obtened by his ability is only counted in the damage display before attacking it. the defense bonus is shown but not counted, i think.
