AuthorThe Survilurg Effect
The night was marvelous. Mild swishes of bat wings and rhythmic chirrup of crickets and beautiful moonshine inundating the grass created a heavenly atmosphere on the nearby lands. Nothing above the still meadows of the East Island could foretell the shattering changes that would shortly fall upon its reign.

Heavy dense clouds suddenly began materializing inexplicably from thin air, gradually covering the sky and depriving the land from the moonlight. A dark-cloaked figure stepped forward and walked up to the center of a glade in the darkness, unwitnessed by any representative of an intelligent race. His every step left tiny meres of soaring shadow growing behind him, but even without that he was well concealed.
The entity seemed to seize the air with its hands and put significant effort into drawing something apart in front of it, as if there were some unseen shutters above it. And then...

Somehow the air just split open, revealing absolute contrast to the surrounding scenery. Massive implosions roared, breaking the idyllic silence, bright glows of wildfire and lightning bolts scorched the meadows and eclipsed the air with a smokescreen. It was primal Chaos, furious and unbending, threatening to devour everything around; still, the dark humanoid seemed to somehow withhold its energy inside. He raised his head to the sky and muttered some incantations. At that point, majestic but unruly, choking as if hungering for the calm and peaceful world they suddenly found a window into, birds of pure fire started flying out of the fissure, one after another, dozen after dozen.

Only when the very last fire-plumed creature finally flew out, the dark character yanked his arms back, and the shutters sealed again, shutting the uncomposed elements inside.

The clouds vanished soon, and almost an hour had passed before the smoke dispersed completely, but the lands weren't peaceful anymore. The happy squeaks of living creatures sealed out in a fiery world for a long time, and finally released to a friendly environment, filled the East Island as the birds flew up and traveled across the gulf in large flocks.

Soon, the entire Empire would know about the arrival of Firebirds, creatures that had always betokened the darkest times in ancient legends.
The cloaked entity rubbed his hands maliciously. The first phase of his great master plan was nearing its final.
Six hours later the campus of the Sunny City Academy was lively as usual. The morning was fresh; no early dew had fallen, so knowing people could expect rain later that day.
Many students bustled around, some alone and some in couples and groups. One such student stood by a column, hunched up with cold, going over the recent events that swarmed in his head. There clearly were things to remember.

Weeks ago he had disguised himself as an apprentice librarian to place an ancient tome in the Central library within Abu-Bakir's reach. He had even personally inscribed a note there, expertly emulating the handwriting in it, explaining that the word "Survilurgs" derived from the words "Survive" and "Lurgies", and bore the meaning of "Those who survived disasters" in ancient times.

Days ago he had smuggled a sack of crystals of time into the workshop, shaped as a gremlin servant at the academy. The time portal had to be opened without the powerful catalyst of the Behemoth constellation in the zenith, so he took care that there would be enough power to ensure the opening.

Hours ago he had burst into the plane of Chaos in his natural form and released the rocs sealed there for years. The Empire Warlord was stubborn, self-confident and superstitious; his self-confidence was a good thing to use in future, so the pretender decided to use his superstition, knowing that his susceptible nature would make him yield to Abu-Bakir's persuasion.

Minutes ago he had sent a missive to his people to weaken attacks on the Empire. He had no intention to stop them, but he had to make sure the Portal would exist safely in order to perform his very own agenda...

That student turned around and stepped into the mist, making his way towards the Academy court.
The second phase of his great master plan was nearing its final.
