Author | Ideas for Magic the Gathering deck (As an help for a friend) |
Hello Lorders and Ladies :)
A friend asked me to find some ideas for Magic the Gathering decks. So if you feel like sharing your thoughts, go on.
If not, then you may leave the thread :D Thank you | Green decks are good for beginners | Is he a newbie? If not, what is he going to play standart or legacy\modern?
If he is a new player, i'd advice to build monored burn - not too expensive, not too hard in playing. | Dan you and I gotta friend each other especially if ya got a ps3. I am an avid magic player since 4th edition. I stopped and sold all my cards at 7 and now back again for some 11th edition and 12th on. In my opinion, red and black are the best beginner combo. 2mana death black spells, 1 mana lightling or spark spells depending on what you have, 1 and 2 mana haste red creatures, 1 and 2 mana deathtouch black creatures and if any also include infect then even better. Flying and unblockbale are so annoying but with death spells and instant damage spells they shouldn't be of too much trouble becuase by the time a big creature comes out, average opponent should be dead. Also red cheap enchantments are best to use, unless you do have infect in which red instant boost offense spells are very, and I do mean DEADLY spells rule. It depends on what cards that person has but in my experience as a trainer and tournament holder in my town, that is easiest. However, there is a green version that is mono colored. | I can give you some recipes of current decks I have for training beginners that can even beat Eldrazi! Seriously. K, well pm me for the details or I can share with the world my Magic genius. K, maybe not genious but pretty damn close haha. Magic is what made me such a braggard in the card game in this game. Blue is too advanced, white...well missing something, like cheap and fast non-rare cards, black is actually more tactful thinking on its own and red, well its red, simple so not to hard to defeat in beginners stages that is, but combo red and black or a good beast or elves deck. Well I can go on and on, apparently. If your intrested as I stated, just pm me or whatever. | IMO red, black, and blue can be combined in various ways and used effectively. But I wouldn't suggest, if you are a beginner, playing more than one of any of those in one deck. | Don't think I can help any. All I know is how to Sacrifice a Black Lotus, Channel and Fireball in the first turn; Or Make Stasis-lock decks with Icy Manipulators. | Probably most relevant is what sort of cards does (s)he have available or intend to get?
If you just want an internet link where they can find their own information, something like StarCityGames (http://www.starcitygames.com/) can be useful. But there are plenty of other sites with decklists and other Magic:tG related info.
I'm always happy to help if you want to PM for suggestions. I owned a card shop (as a hobby) for 3 years and used to run tournaments for over 4 years.
Have Fun
Grunge | Thanks a lot guys :)
And for Takesister, what about Chaos Orb ? :P | loli.. | takesister, lets meet up and play magic some time. We'll ante your black lotus for my hurloon minotaur :)
Besides the link which Grunge provided, you can head on down to tcgplayer for more deck-building info | and if you ever need 100% correct rulings, the wizards of the coast hotline number is 1-800-324-6496. They are open everyday from 9am-6pm pacific time. Settled all kinds of arguements my friends and I had. | For MTG Q&A -

I'm on a rules mailing list, but there hasn't been much activity on it the last few years. [email protected]
A good summary of the available resources on the web can be found at http://www.mtgthesource.com/forums/showthread.php?5268-How-To-Answer-Your-Own-Question
Much better than a 1-800 number, especially since playing LMW implies a internet connection.
Have Fun
Grunge | ouch grunge, haha, IMHO talking to a live person rather than reading is waaaaaayy easier, not that I can't read but to each their own I suppose. And the number is only for questions on rulings not deck making. Then again I suppose you could call them and ask them what they think of a deck ya made. Hmmmm, either way I'm writing down the sites also suggested by grunge. Access to several sources only increase knowledge potential. Not really sure what I meant by that, haha. uhhh, K, I'm done :) | Alright so Dan posted this thread for me awhile back. It's been a while since I originally played the game but a friend of mine is deep into MTG and started talking smack about how I couldn't beat him. So of course I was coaxed back in...
Through this thread I was originally looking for deck ideas, such as a Sliver deck or such similar themes. I opted on 5 others, having the following themes:
Golems (white, blue, green with mostly artifacts/golems)
Infect (blue green)
Human (all white)
Card Killer (blue deck of "target player puts the top X cards in their library into their graveyard")
Land Destruction (all red)
Land Destruction seems the best so far(for the person with the deck, not so much on the other end), and consists of:
MANNA
Basic land mountains x20
Caged Sun x1
CREATURES
Charmbreaker Demons x4
Sisters of the Flame x4
Anarchist x1
SORCERY/INSTANTS
Roiling Terrain x4
Wake of Destruction x1
Icefall x1
Seismic Strike x2
Seismic Spike x3
Yawning Fissure x3
Pyretic Ritual x1
Overmaster x4
Melt Terrain x3
Rain of Salt x2
Victorious Destruction x3
Spire barrage x2
Into the Maw of Hell x1 | Is the deck you're making standard? (Near all of the cards I listed are fine for standard actually)
If you don't particularly care about that and just want a deck I'd definitely suggest artifacts...
4 Tempered steel
4 Memnite
4 Steel overseer
4 Myr Galvanizer
4 Palladium Myr
4 Gold Myr
2 Myr Sire
2 Myr Battlesphere
1 Myr Turbine
4 Suture Preist
1 Darksteel Juggernaut
1 Semblance Anvil
1 All is dust
1 Myr Matrix
1 Shrine of loyal legion
There's really a lot that can be put into a artifact deck and just work... you can have a deck that basically have a collective total converted mana cost of 10 if you wanted. Suture Priest or other such cards work very well in a myr art deck, especially with a genesis chamber and/or a shrine of loyal legion.
One last thing, if you do make a mono white art deck, remember you >can< put either tezzeret into it. (All you need is dual lands, or lands for any color, or to adjust the myrs in the deck to provide different mana. Since art decks are usually very well on mana ramp, they can afford to go outside of their colors for single cards. Playing Tezzeret agent of bolas effectively being a win condition.) | M:tG Decks?
Blue+Green Madness, Black+Green Madness, White+Green Madness, Kamigawa Era Mono-Blue Control, Terravore/Armageddon, Howling Mine/Iron Maiden Control, Black+White Pestilence (Evolving since Unlimited), Blue+Red Counter/Burn, Mono-Black Burn, Black+Red Land Destruction (an old 1v1 casual deck from Ice Age/Alliances era), Red+White Burn/Lifegain (a modified version of this gave me top 8 at Regionals in 2006, I've been playing different versions of this deck since Ice Age), Mono-Black Clerics+Zombies (second place in States 2003), Blue+White Good Stuff deck (been playing it since Unlimited. Has changed a lot over the years), 2 different flavours of Mono-Black Zombie decks, Ninja/Rats and Elves!!
And those are just my favorites. I have plenty of others that are decent, but just aren't as fun to play (mostly old tournament decks). I haven't been playing so much since I closed my card shop back in 2009.
There are all sorts of decks you can make, but a lot depends on your card-pool and preferences. Are you looking for 1v1 or multi-player? Do you like combo decks?
It's easy to make a decent Sliver deck, but it can be hard to find the good Sliver Cards these days. Too many other people have made their own Sliver decks.
Maybe you have a particular card you want to build a deck around?
In any case there are plenty of online forums where you can find ideas or help for stuff like this. Perhaps http://forums.starcitygames.com/forumdisplay.php?10-Multiplayer-EDH-and-Casual-Magic-Discussion ?
Grunge | Reading this is a blast from the past. I started playing Magic just as 3rd edition was ending and 4th edition was coming out. I played for 3-4 years and quit. I think the game is completely different now. My bro still plays a little. Favorite decks were an infinite mana deck (actually not very effective) and a poison counter deck (surprisingly effective) |
