Looks like most alternate DE upgrades provide additional HP and/or Def at the cost of special abilities.

For caster DE I think Taskmaster and Brisk Rider are better I think. More HP -> more endurance for troops to last so that the DE can get more spells out. |

As special abilities for Brisk Riders only Assault is mentioned but interesstingly they also deal damage to creatures they ride past.
Check out this fight you can see how he goes for my mages and gremlins and deals damage while he rids past some of the stacks.

They deal 1/4 of the normal damage for each stack they attack while riding past them.
So, this ability is very useful in combats against large numbers of stacks with small defense.
Lizard assailants are excellent to kill high-level creatures. |
