Why is it that 1 druid can do 28 damage with lightning, but 6 druids can only do 48? Shouldn't they be able to do 168 damage with a stack of 6? | no. think of it as 1 druid adds 1 spell power | It's because additional druids in a stack only add towards spell power and not the base damage . It's the same thing with magi .
In a way , say the 1st druid in a stack is your caster with his own single point of knowledge , while the rest are just spell power points . So , while a cast of magic punch deals 28 dmg , additional druids in the only add spell power to the base dmg of 28 . For more info on the formula ,search the spells section in 'About The Game' .
PS : I think this system was made in order to balance the game . After all , if all the 6 druids can deal 168 dmg , then factions with no magic or not concentrated on chaos magic will definitely not stand a chance . | It's even less than +1 druid = +1 spell power. It scales down more as the number of druid/magi increases.

in the original HoMM, with weekly creature growth and map dwellings available for recruiting, it's fairly normal to accumulate 30-40 druids in a few weeks, if their spell damage aren't scaled down, 600-800 damage lightning is simply too unbalancing. | 1
Because then it would be pretty too easy to kill infantry. (If we consider that elves also have avengers` guild) |
