By the way vv, how did you come up with your name?
Virtual Vitriol I would expect, and has a cleverness to its construction. Though I have not seen vitrea used other than in your name. I have always presumed it came from a similar root, though that assumption may not be valid. |
Vitrea is related to white, i would assume it is latin, a word that is related is vitreous, as in vitreous humor in the eye. But I doubt there is much thought behind the name. |
Vitrea is latin, relating to glass. In old chemical naming it related to sulphates, often since the crystals of metal sulphates look glassy (or at least stained glass).
The vitreous humour in the eye similar stems from the latin for glass like.
So is VV virtual glass
or is he virtual criticism |
Lol, thanks miles. Looks like i am getting rusty....
Imma remember that for future use. |
How's everybody enjoying the new ST so far? |
Well if you must know..
As a child, around 12 years old, I was at the time fascinated with Virtual reality technology. I was reading up a lot on that topic, and the budding science enthusiast in me was especially amazed by an article which talked about the potential use of VR in assisting the blind and visually impaired. By that time i had come to know that the most common cause of visual impairment and blindness i.e. not trauma related or due to congenital/chromosomal anomaly, was a progressive disease due to fatty acid depositing (drusen formation) on the Bruch’s membrane (at that time which imagined simply as fat globules blocking on the lamina vitrea). So there it went into my character creation.. initial fascination with VR turned to obsession, I really wanted the Virtual reality in everything haha. Embarrassing now perhaps. Also, in hindsight, i must have been inspired by the whole thing because when i was even younger, my dad would often take me along to a center for the blind/visually impaired where he helped provide help/resources. Interacting with such people who look so similar but their daily living is so dramatically different provided a huge influence at that very young age..
so yeah vitrea comes from the Bruch’s membrane.. which as Miles stated is the clear membrane which is itself fascinating because the exact composition is very hard to determine as it varies person to person and accrues changes even in the same person’s lifetime with aging. |
I feel enlightened, thank you for that vv. Tis a nice tale, based upon good will and kind thinking, with no vitriol in sight.
I had a bit of a read about some of those things, as am a bit rusty on some of the details. And saw a different name to what I was taught for a part of the eye, namely the suspensory ligaments. Instead of this name which is the name taught in Biology in the UK I much prefer the other name called the Zonule of Zinn. If you ever feel like making an alt, perhaps zz would be a suitable moniker. |
The Canal of Schlemm.
Sounds like some fictitious polluted waterway in a fantasy novel. |
