which means he works 5 days its just he has no control on which 5 days |
Not having control of them doesnt mean they aren't scheduled, just scheduled by the boss.
When I worked in retail I worked 6 days a week, but my 1 day off was random, I still wouldn't say I had no scheduled days off. |

for pilots its really unpredictable, they work on availability and location, my dad was one for 30 years and we never knew when he was going to be home, the scheduling of pilots is dynamic, its just that they cant work more than 50 hours a week, no other things apply, even their crew chief does not know when he might need to deploy someone. |

| I normally have 3-4 working days in a week's roster. Now there are very often emergency runs for pilots. Just because we are at home doesn't mean we are off like a holiday. We are on standby. If a pilot can't make it for an emergency reason, then the standby pilot is immediately sent to fly. We don't know when we can be called. Hence we make it clear if we are going somewhere or going to do something much in advance to the bosses. So they can appropriately select standby pilots. Also we get paid almost 1.3x to 2x the money we get paid for a normal flight because we have to fly at such short notices. |

Normally for junior pilots like me, the chances of being a standby pilot is very high. Since we fill in normally for pilots who are married and have family emergencies etc. for us it’s a chance to earn extra buck at not much problems so why not .
Also a small hint is that we get paid by the hour not by the flight. So we try and maximise our flying hours per week to get the most buck per week. We have the fixed bonuses etc but these just let us buy that extra thing we always want or spend on something expensive.
This is the same reason you’d have noticed that a pilot even after landing and slowing down goes to end of the runway and takes a turn. We try and maximise the time spent in the plane so that we get the most hours. If we spend 15 minutes per flight delaying the taxing to the aerodrome. That’s 15x5 flights a week which means 1 hr 15 mins worth of extra buck we make just by delaying the Plane. Now you know :D |
