As much as i admire Atkinson, that wasn't even funny to me. I stay away from humor that relies on elements like these, and i mean particularly a not so brilliant barrage of insults, and audience laughter which is overused to the point of annoyance.
I see what you mean - I did not expect it to be particularly humorous in isolation - canned laughter was endemic in the 80's when that was made (came out in 1989) and it grates on me in a way that it did not use to.

This is from the fourth series of Blackadder which is a) very British relating to a number of idiosyncrasies and b) has built upon a lot of prior character development and typecasting. Without that it is not really funny - Watch various bits of Monty Python in isolation and it will miss, in context however it is genius.

The extended metaphors - particularly with overly convoluted insults was a well known feature of Blackadder in general.

I put the link up there as I thought you were suggesting I wasn;t quoting something, rather than expecting you to like it particularly.

Most comedy dates rather, Fawlty Towers generally doesn;t so much, nor Monty Python, alsmot all other things you look back at later on and it feels like it has lost its edge. That being said, I would still watch Blackadder and enjoy it (though not the first series - that wasn'e very good at all IMO).
it was the wrong link anyway - not that I would expect you to be more amused by it, but for clarity

Amuses me seeing people discuss British comedy. :D
Omg I didn't understand anything xD
Amuses me seeing people discuss British comedy. :D

Amuses me seeing that people think comedy needs categorizing ;)
It doesn;t but cultural references can easily be missed - for example within one of these he references Punch from Punch and Judy shows - these are I believe quintessentially English and so unlikely to be picked up by many in the international mix we have here.
well, that's a terrible excuse. If that logic were to be used, people wouldn't have netflix and hulu installed everywhere which are brimming with foreign shows. And even standard cable these days in every country has plenty of thriller, comedy, drama produced from all over the world. So, what i am trying to say is that yes we are an international mix no doubt, but it does not preclude us from having diverse interests and capabilities.
By "capabilities," I meant capability to appreciate and critique content as we see fit.

Someone suggest post editing for forum ;)
I disagree. Stating a truth (it is a British Comedy) does not confine anyones enjoyment nor prevent anyone from watching it. However, it merely highlights that certain aspects of it you may not get why it is funny due to a lack of knowledge, this is true whether it is because of something being from one country or lack of certain historical knowledge or a multitude of reasons I shall not list.

I have watched many a comedy program where I know I have missed a joke because I lacked certain knowledge as to why that it was funny. Sometimes I am sure I may have even missed that there was something funny there because of that lack of knowledge.

The more cited within a culture a comedy is based the more likely that jokes are missed, and so consequently someone outside of it is likely to have a lower appreciation of it due to these missed aspects. Blackadder is a historical comedy based around key points in British history, it therefore is likely to have a higher than average ratio of these aspects.

I have no problems if you found any one sketch or indeed the entirety of a series' of Blackadder not funny or no good. You are completely entitled to your judgement on it. I am still content that the last time I watched it I enjoyed it and that is enough for me :)
Omg pls some different topic now -.-
I agree, I am even annoying myself!
