Got it on the 10th try.
Going with mercenaries is a guaranteed loss if they press auto because AI will feed the pikemen, strangers, and whatever else to the camels.
The shooter builds didn't work for me when I copy them exactly. I modified to them have a meatier shield and I brought the satyrs along too.

I agree with you about having good armies. I don't have pikemen so when I got 3 different mercs with pikemen who all pressed auto on lvl 33, their pikemen get swarmed then my they come for my shooters and we lose miserably. It seems clear from your experience that with double pikemen (+ support), it's an easy auto battle. |
