I think that the higher level the higher insane.
When I play against defending troops they can have 130-140 def. My tower makes 10 dmg to them. I just tried as necro. My full stacks of 80 Appa can kill 3-4 Varan beaters. After all even when I win noone from village can survive it, so that effort is pointless. |

For me, battles are either super easy or Impossible.
Which tells me there's dynamic balancing in play.
So just keep playing. If you lose, expect next to be easier.

The problem with going full defence is you end with a lot of pyhrric victories.
