| The last one third of the show felt out of place. The author initially planned Mellow and Near to be L's children. That probably would have made more sense as the last arc would have been more connected to the first two-thirds of the anime. |
Maybe because Mellow and Near's make appearance out of no where. The whole "L's successors" idea seemed to be badly done and it feels a bit uncalled for because there is not just one but two of them suddenly claiming L's place. Especially, at this point when most viewers are dealing with their disappointment of L's death and do not feel like M and N are worth their time.
But the actual reason i think people have such a strong opinion is because L had a really strong characterization; the color of his skin, his hair, awkwardness and overall eccentric disposition. It really overshadows Near and Mellow's characters by far and the show is at a crucial point where it just doesn't spend any time on exploring their uniqueness. The creators thew out all creativity out of the window and made it worse when they showed Near having same awkwardness about him like L. That just made him nothing but a washed up/rejected L placeholder for the show.
So, we didn't really get anything specific to appreciate the newer characters and i think that's why people don't like it. However, by the time, I already sold myself to that anime and i was just happy about so many other things that were going right (in my opinion). The final episode was so impactful for me, when i first watched the anime I was 17 and i believed it to be such a masterpiece. I can't help but love it :p |
