The problem with your steel set is that it lacks initiative. Inititive is important when you encounter thief hunters (who are usually DEs like you).
i have win several DEs as a DE in ambush or being ambushed, i was using steel and they were mostly using mithril, i have lower racial lv as well :) |

I think it's an open secret that mithril set is overpriced and underpowered, which trades defense for magic defense. The +ini boost from the boots and helm is so tiny that I would prefer the extra defense the steel set gives.
IMO, never ever use mithril set for thieving, if you love your gold. I know I have regretted to have ever bought them. |

You may have use the steel set, but I bet you also used 2xrings of abdication and pendant of despair ;p
Your comment did not tell the whole truth, right?
When 2 full arted DE battle, the one with the higher +ini will have the advantage. That's the undisputable truth. |
