pokemon and cowboy bebop.

At least someone's got some true "anime" on here.

Back in the day... man. Today the term "anime" has sold out so much. Avatar from Nickelodeon? That's... not anime. Not by a long shot.

To be all technical and stuff, anime is Japanese made. Literally. It means "cartoon" in Japanese, and is used to refer specifically to Japanese cartoons; not Korean, not Chinese, and definitely not American.

The reason you are seeing all these anime-style American cartoons pop up is because in the last 10 years, Japan has been the lead in the 90's animation boom.

Here's a little history lesson. Animation has been around since the early 1900's. At the time, however, it was ridiculously difficult and expensive. Anyone who wanted a career in animation went bankrupt very quickly, so very very few "cartoons" were actually made. In the early 1940's, Japanese artists wanted to experiment in animation with better technology. Albeit more efficient, it still cost too much money. And then war came along. In an effort to save the failed artists, the Japanese Empire paid them to create animated propaganda films for their military. At that time the Americans and Germans had mostly live-action propaganda... which eventually proved less effective. When the Americans caught word of this towards the end of the war they decided to start doing the same thing... researching animation techniques and eventually creating similarly animated propaganda.

At the end of WWII, there was actually money in the animation business and cartoons took off. America soared in the lead, considering their victory. Eventually, when Japan's economy stabilized in the late 60's, many of their animators took American concepts and began their animation business. Even with the late start, Japanese animation has made far more advances and has received more renown throughout the competition; most of which is accredited to the fact that their initial outlook was that cartoons were not meant for just children. America had a firm stance that animation was a way to keep children entertained.

Slightly digressing. By the turn of the millennium, American animators began to draw off of anime in the hopes that they will draw in a higher consumer base. Those already a fan of anime throughout the 90's have fairly strictly turned their backs on this so-called "Japanimation." Japanimation is incorrectly used to describe anime, when it's true meaning is "Japanese styled cartoons."

Hopefully one day this new generation of Japanimation fans will be able to see the real differences in Japanese and American made cartoons and will realize why the Japanese will always have an edge. That is not to say all American cartoons were bad... but the ones that were good did not receive the credit they deserved. (Usually seen as cult cartoons or too vulgar to be on television by parents; as they were raised in an era of animation only being for children.)

Aaaand I'm spent. :)
uuhhh, all that just to say you like pokemon and cowboy bebop?

And interpret it how you will, but anime is just short for animation. And Japanimationis Japanese made. Literally. It means "cartoon" in Japan, and is used to refer specifically to Japanese cartoons; not Korean, not Chinese, and definitely not American.

and
Avatar from Nickelodeon is "anime"

I just looked up the definition, something told me to do that first before I inserted foot in mouth, and you ipslne are correct.

So best anime and/or "cartoons" to be listed in this thread :)
